Robert "Bob" Alper grew up in Gloucester, MA, and was known for his quick wit and magnetic personality. As a boarding student at St. John’s, he embraced the values of discipline, teamwork, and strong academics. He played football for the Prep, where he learned the importance of commitment and collaboration. After graduating, Bob attended the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and went on to open Kettle Cove Pharmacy in Magnolia, a village in his hometown. The pharmacy became a beloved local spot, complete with an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. Bob’s love for antiques inspired him to furnish the parlor with unique pieces, including church pews he cut in half for seating and stained-glass light fixtures he crafted himself. After his untimely passing, Bob’s family established this scholarship fund in his name to honor his memory and support the education and personal growth of future generations of young men at St. John’s Prep.

Alumnae Affinity Fund

The Alumnae Affinity Fund was established by the female members of the Classes of 1973–1977. This Fund is intended to support emergency and incidental expenses for students, at the discretion of the Director of Multicultural Affairs and Community Development.

Paul Reynolds Ames Fund

This scholarship fund was established in memory of Paul Reynolds Ames by his grandparents, Pauline and Robert F. Reynolds '55.

Colonel Harold H. Audet Fund

Harold “Pete” Hudson Audet was born on October 10, 1918, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. A 1936 graduate of Newburyport High School, he completed two years of post-graduate study at Governor Dummer Academy before earning degrees from Colgate University (AB, 1942), McGill University (MDCM, 1945), and Tulane University (MPH, 1954). Pete had a distinguished military career, serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and retired in 1972 with the rank of Colonel. His honors included the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. Though he never attended St. John’s Prep, Pete admired the school and believed strongly in its mission. He created a scholarship to support local boys like himself—young men whose families couldn’t afford to attend. While not a Prep alumnus by education, Pete considered himself an Eagle in spirit and through the legacy he chose to leave behind.

Capt. and Mrs. Robert M. Barr, Jr. USN (Ret.) GP'05 '08 Fund

Bro. Sebastian Barresi, C.F.X. Fund

Brother Sebastian Barresi was born in Lynn, MA, in 1927 to Italian immigrants and was named George in honor of George Washington. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II before answering his call to religious life as a Xaverian Brother. Brother Sebastian began his teaching career in Baltimore and the Bronx before joining St. John’s Prep in 1961 as the school’s first full-time director of guidance. He also founded the Community Service Corps, a precursor to today’s Campus Ministry program. Deeply committed to service, he led pilgrimages to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina, bringing aid to the war-torn region. Brother Sebastian passed away shortly before his 80th birthday and 60th anniversary as a Xaverian Brother. To honor his legacy of compassion and service, his sister-in-law, Greta Barresi, established a scholarship in his name to carry on his ministry and ensure his memory lives on through future generations.

John R. Barry '31 Scholarship Fund

John, a member of the Class of 1931, completed a postgraduate year at St. John’s before continuing his studies at Villanova. A proud member of the 1907 Society, he left a bequest to the school upon his passing in 2004, which established this fund in his memory.

James E. Batchelder '58 Fund and the Joan M. Batchelder Fund

James Batchelder joined St. John’s Prep as a post-graduate during the 1957–58 school year. After his time at the Prep, he went on to attend Holy Cross and later married Joan in the early 1970s.

Steven W. Bekel '12 Fund

This scholarship honors the memory of Steven Bekel, a member of the St. John’s Prep Class of 2012, who, along with his father, William, tragically passed away in a car accident in May 2009. The loss deeply affected both their friends in Danvers and the St. John’s Prep community. At the time, Steven’s classmates were freshmen, and they came together to honor his memory through a series of fundraisers. Their efforts helped establish this lasting tribute. The scholarship is awarded annually to a rising sophomore from Danvers who is an accomplished student and who has active involvement in the extracurricular life of the school.

Paul Benger Fund

This fund was established by Paul Benger Jr.'s mother in 1972, following his passing at the age of 54.

Dr. Robert E. Birmingham Fund

The Dr. Robert M. Birmingham Fund was established by Katherine Birmingham in memory of her brother, a respected and beloved physician in Lawrence, MA.

David P. Blais '03 Fund

David was deeply proud to be an alumnus of St. John’s Prep and cherished his time as a member of the school’s athletic programs. He especially loved competing in wrestling and football. A bright light to his family and friends, David will be remembered for his kind heart, gentle nature, and the warmth he brought to those around him. His family is profoundly grateful to all who have honored his memory and continue to keep his spirit alive.

Patrick Box Fund

Patrick William Box was set to begin his journey at St. John’s Prep in September 1968 but tragically passed away in a swimming accident that July. Though he never had the chance to attend, Patrick’s connection to the Prep runs deep. Other alumni in his family included his father, Dr. Leonard Box ’22, and his brothers, James Box ’53 and Leonard Box Jr. ’61. The legacy was extended with his brothers-in-law, Joseph Moloney ’49 and Austin Ford Jr. ’59. Today, Patrick’s memory lives on through a scholarship established in his name, ensuring that the Box family's enduring connection to St. John’s continues to support future generations.

Daniel J. and Johanna M. Boyle Fund

The Daniel J. and Johanna M. Boyle Scholarship Fund was created by their sons—Daniel J. Boyle, Jr. ’43, James M. Boyle, C.F.X. ’48, and Joseph P. Boyle ’52—in loving tribute to their parents. Although Daniel, a member of the St. John’s Prep Class of 1911, and his wife Johanna did not attend college, they held a deep belief in the power of education. Daniel became a respected leader in Peabody’s leather industry and was later appointed Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Labor and Industries. Despite limited means, he and Johanna made it a priority to provide their sons with a Catholic education at St. John’s Prep and to have the opportunity to pursue higher education. Their sons went on to earn degrees from institutions such as Notre Dame, Harvard, Catholic University, Boston College, Holy Cross, and Boston University. Today, their legacy continues through this scholarship, which provides financial assistance to Prep students and honors the enduring values of faith, family, and education. That legacy continued with grandsons Daniel ’87 and Gerard ’91, great-grandson Michael ’23, and Jolyne Boyle—wife of Joe ’52—who served on the Prep’s Board of Trustees.

Coach John Boyle Scholarship Fund

In honor of their 50th reunion in May 2023, the Class of 1973 established an endowed scholarship to recognize John Boyle. A beloved teacher, coach, and former resident director, John has been a pillar of the St. John’s Prep community for over 50 years. He is known for his wisdom, passion, and unwavering dedication to generations of students.

Bush Family Music Support Fund

This fund was created to support the music department at the Prep, with a focus on extraordinary expenses such as instruments, sheet music, and other program needs. Carol Bush P'07 shared, "Our son, Christopher '07 spent four wonderful years with Michael Hamill, an extraordinary educator. The fund was created to recognize the outstanding job he does and to support the efforts of his department."

Michael R. Byrne '81 Fund

Michael’s mother, Clara Byrne, described him as the ultimate “Preppy.” Growing up in the same neighborhood as St. John’s, Michael and his brother Sean often rode their bikes to campus, chatting with the Brothers along the way. From a young age, Michael proudly declared he would one day attend the Prep—and he did, joining the Class of 1981. He spent two joyful years at St. John’s and was a member of the ski team before his life was tragically cut short by a drunk driver during his junior year. In his memory, Brother Keefe helped the Byrne family establish an endowed scholarship fund to support students who wish to attend St. John’s but need financial assistance. Michael’s brother Sean continued the family legacy, graduating in the Class of 1984. This fund honors Michael’s joyful spirit and love for the Prep, helping others achieve the dream he cherished.

Named after Edward Cahill '71's parents, this fund was established to benefit a student from Lynn who attended a Catholic feeder school.

Anne and Bernard Caniff, Sr. P'72 GP'97 '98 '00 Fund

This fund was established by Bernie and Debbie Caniff in 2020 to honor Bernie’s parents Anne and Bernie, Sr. One of their sons went to the Prep – Bernie Jr. ’72 along with his sons Bernie, III ’98 and John ’00 as well as one of their grandchildren Michael Brainerd ’97. This fund was set up to help provide a Prep education for a deserving student first from a single parent family; should that qualification not be met in any given year, the fund is to be used for any other deserving student. Bernie Jr., ’72 served on the St. John’s Prep Board of Trustees for many years, and was the Chair from 2012-2015.

Ray Carey '67 Diversity Fund

As a teacher, coach, advocate, mentor, and Prep graduate, Ray Carey is a powerful voice for diversity, equity, and community. This scholarship is supported by the annual Ray Carey ’67 Diversity Fund Golf Tournament held each June. This tournament helps advance the mission of this diversity fund—to foster an inclusive community at St. John's by providing need-based tuition assistance for students of color and by supporting the important work of the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Development.

John A. Carnevale '81 Fund

A trustee, parent, and alumnus, John passed away unexpectedly in 2016. He was the first recipient of the Brother Linus, C.F.X. Scholarship in 1978. As a longtime chairman of the tournament committee, John and his company, Sentinel Benefits & Financial Group, have proudly served as Presenting Sponsor of this event for many years. The John A. Carnevale '81 Scholarship was established by St. John’s Prep in partnership with Sentinel Cares and the Carnevale family in June 2016. The John Carnevale '81 Scholarship is presented annually to a rising freshman who mirrors John's passion and enthusiasm for the Prep community, supports his peers, encourages all to be their best, and is a positive influence for others.

Marianne B. Carvotta Fund

This scholarship was started by Donna Moulton, Marianne's sister. It goes to an incoming freshman in the greater Haverhill Area. Marianne was Donna's younger sister and at age 41 was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rapidly growing and fatal brain tumor. She went through numerous treatments and surgeries but ultimately died within 15 months. She was a single mom and left three daughters ages 13, 16, 19. Donna and her husband became the legal guardian of the youngest two and mentor to the oldest. Marianne was instrumental in getting necessary funding and eventually co-founded the Pregnancy Care Center in Haverhill, MA back in the early 1990’s,a non-profit Christian based counseling and service center.

The Joseph C. Ciavardone, Jr. '91 and Laurellyn D. Ciavardone Scholarship Fund

Joseph Ciavardone was the oldest of four children, raised in a single parent family. His father was killed on his job when Joe was ten years old, and financially, things were very tight when he was growing up. Though academically strong, the only way Joe was able to attend St. John's was by receiving a scholarship. Brother Keefe took him under his wing and made sure that he would have this opportunity. In Joe's own words: "Though I appreciated the opportunity at the time, it wasn't until later in life that I truly understood the value of a Prep education and how the values lived there shaped my life and positioned me for success."

Francis J. Cimerol Fund

Francis Cimerol served as chairperson of the English Department at St. John's Prep from 1975 until his sudden and untimely death in 1988. A brilliant and dedicated educator, Frank challenged his students daily to become voracious readers, eloquent writers, and insightful thinkers. More importantly, he also challenged them to break out of their cocoons and reach out to those in need. In his memory, Frank's family, friends, and former students established this scholarship, which is awarded to a member of the sophomore English Honors Program who best exemplifies those qualities that Frank treasured and engendered in his students.

Michael T. Clancy Endowment Fund

At the Prep from 1954 to 1966, Michael T. Clancy was known as Brother Patrician. Michael was a history, social studies and religion teacher. He was an outstanding track coach for cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field, winning many Catholic, state, Belmont Relays, and New England Championships. Under his leadership, the Prep track & field teams were the teams to beat, both as a team and for individual competitors.

Class of '58 Spirit Fund

This fund was established by the Class of 1958 to honor their 50th reunion. The Class of 1958 wanted to leave a legacy that would perpetuate support for St. John's, so they established this scholarship fund in lieu of a physical class gift.

Class of 1971 Endowment Fund

In honor of the 50th reunion for the Class of 1971, the Class of 1971 Endowment Fund was established supporting tuition assistance for students.

Class of 1972 Centennial Endowment Fund

The Class of 1972 Endowment Fund was established by members of the St. John's Prep Class of '72 as a way to recognize the Centennial celebration in 2007. Spearheaded by ‘72 alumni W. Brian Harrigan, Bernie Caniff, and Bruce Lane, and supported by fellow classmates, this collective commitment to the Prep supports students who need tuition assistance to further their educational goals.

Captain John M. Coady '44 Fund

This fund was established in memory of Captain John M. Coady '44 - father of three sons who are also alumni: Edward Coady, Andrew Coady and Stephen Coady and well as John Coady - not an alumnus but father of John Coady '00 and Matthew Coady '01.

George and Marie Coleman Fund

This scholarship was established as a gift from the estate of George and Marie Coleman for an outstanding student from Salem, MA.

Michael J. Connelly '75 Fund

This fund was established in memory of Michael Connelly '75 who was killed in an automobile accident in January, 1975 on his way to school.

Scott M. Connolly '07 Fund

The Scott Connolly '07 Scholarship was established by the Class of 2007 to honor the legacy and memory of their friend, classmate, teammate, and brother, Scott. This award is presented to a member of the Junior class who best models Scott's spirit, enthusiasm, and joy for life.

Charles Connor '75 Fund

Charlie Connor '75 was a Trustee on the St. John's Board from 2013 until the time of his death in 2018. His three sons are also Prep alumni: Brian '08, Matthew '10, and Michael '10.

Arthur J. Coviello '71 Director of Justice and Peace Fund

This endowment was established to fund the Director of Justice and Peace position within the Center for Mission and Research.

Robert H. Crosby '58 Fund

Established in 2018, the Robert H. Crosby '58 fund was created upon Bob's passing. The fund supports students with financial need, with a preference for a student from Salem or Peabody.

David "Tank" Crowley '51 Fund

This scholarship goes to a sophomore who is a student athlete and involved in community service. David "Tank" Crowley '51 was an all-star athlete and voted the most popular in the Senior Class. He co-captained the football, hockey and baseball teams, and was active in the Glee Club. He is also in the St. John's Prep Athletic Hall of Fame.

George W. Crowley Fund

John J. Crowley '26 and David J. Crowley Jr. '88 Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Mary Crowley in memory of her husband who graduated from the Prep in 1926. The scholarship was named Dr. John J. Crowley '26 Scholarship. In May 2019, the scholarship was renamed to include David Crowley '88.

Jim Daly '71 Fund

James M. Daly '71 passed May 5, 2015 at 62 years of age. Born in Salem, he graduated from St. Mary's Grammar School in Salem. After the Prep, he graduated from Boston College in 1975 with a BA degree in Mathematics and again in 1978 with a MA in Mathematics. At BC Jim played rugby for four years and was elected Captain of the Boston College Rugby Club. After graduating BC, he was elected a member of Salem City Council. He worked as a defense contractor involved in highly classified government projects. During the 1970's and 1980's, he was also involved with the Old Gold Rugby Football Club; this club, founded in 1974 in Boston by a group of BC alumni, has completed and toured around the globe, and is steeped in history and tradition. Jim was elected to their Hall of Fame in 2004. Jim was diagnosed with ALS and lived with the disease for nine years before he died. He was involved with software engineers that developed a program where Jim used only his eye movements to operate a computer keyboard. Jim is survived by his wife Magda and two sons, who are also Prep grads -- John '11 and Matthew '14.

Alec and Martha DeSimone Fund

This fund was set up by Tom and Midge DeSimone to honor Tom’s parents, Alec and Martha DeSimone. Martha taught Math at SJP as well. Four of their sons went to the Prep -- Tom '68, Alec '70, David '83 and Peter '90, and the tradition continues with their sons and grandsons. When Tom’s brother, Alec, died suddenly in 2014, having no spouse or children, he left Tom and his siblings a considerable inheritance. Tom decided to donate his share of this to this fund in order to honor Alec, and to speed its growth and ability to assist students at SJP. Tom served on St. John's Board of Trustees for many years, and was Chair from 2006-2008.

Paul C. Desjardins '74 Fund

Paul was born in Salem, Mass., the third of six children. Paul was a 1974 graduate of St John's Prep. He was a tri-captain for the Prep's football team and was a member of the track & field team; these experiences taught him teamwork and commitment. Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, and everything outdoors. Paul attended the University of Connecticut, the University of Vermont, Salem State College and Colorado State University, where he earned a master's degree in heath physics. Paul was a senior engineer for the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, EG&G Inc., and at the time of his death worked for Hydro Nuclear Services Inc. at the Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth, Mass. The family of Paul C. Desjardins started the named scholarship fund in his memory to assist with the education of eligible St. John's Prep students.

J. Dennis DiPaolo '71 and Jeanne E. Larssen Scholarship Fund

Jeanne Larssen worked with her husband, Dennis DiPaolo, to build a business that treated all of their coworkers like family. Jeanne also operated the LifePath Energy Healing Center to support spirituality in every form. After 35 years together, Jeanne passed in 2015. Dennis remembers the gift of financial aid that allowed him to attend the Prep along with "the smartest people I would ever meet." His wish is to support students who otherwise could not afford the amazing opportunities of a Prep education. 

Dittrich Family Endowment Fund

This fund was set up by Tim and Amy Dittrich, whose sons are Prep graduates: Tyler '06, and Dylan '09. Amy was on the St. John's Board of Trustees from 2009-2018. The scholarship is for a Swampscott student since they wanted to support a deserving, Prep-bound student from their hometown.

The Dorothy Dolan P'05 Fund

The fund was set up by Drew LeBlanc '05 to honor his mother, Dorothy Dolan, and the impact she made during her 16 years in her advancement career at St. John's. The hope is that the fund represents the opportunity and chance for other young men that was afforded to Drew as he began his educational journey.  

Brother William Drinan, C.F.X. Fund

Brother Drinan served as a faculty member from 1961-1971 and Headmaster from 1989-2001. This fund was established in his honor by alumni, parents and colleagues.

Dr. Paul H. Duff Fund

Established by the Duff Family in honor of their father, Dr. Paul H. Duff. There are six Duff brothers: John, Brendan, Brian, Gerald, Kevin and Roderick - all Prep graduates. John has two sons, Gregory and John who graduated and grandsons Johnathan Duff and Dylan Cox, also graduates.

Alice M. Dunn Memorial Fund

Established in 2009, the Alice M. Dunn Memorial Fund was created by Alice's husband, Paul GP'12.

Rene A. and Rita F. Durand Fund

Rene A. Durand, Jr. '65 established this fund in St. John's centennial year of 2007 and the year his mother would be celebrating her 84th birthday. He wanted to honor his parents, and the sacrifice they made to send him to St. John's. Without a scholarship himself when he was a student, Rene's family would not have been able to afford to send him to the Prep, and he promised himself that if he ever had the financial means, he would pay it forward by establishing a scholarship. He loved his time at St. John's for the academics, sports and personal growth and wanted to ensure that future young men would benefit as he did.

Faculty Endowment Fund

The Faculty Endowment Fund was established in 1992 to support faculty development.

Paul J. Famico, Jr. '88 Fund

This annual award is given to a rising senior who resides in Danvers and has been actively involved in the Prep community. The scholarship was established in memory of Paul Famico '88 by his family and friends after his death in 1989.

Francis X. Farmer Family Scholarship Fund 

The Francis X. Farmer Family Scholarship Fund was established in memory of Francis Xavier Farmer, a proud native of Lynn, Massachusetts, who dedicated sixteen years to Catholic education. A graduate of St. Joseph’s Grammar School and St. Mary’s Boys High School in Lynn, Francis continued his academic journey at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Francis deeply valued Catholic education, a legacy he passed on to his family. His four sons and three grandsons are proud graduates of St. John’s Prep. Named after St. Francis Xavier—the Patron Saint who inspired the Xaverian Brothers to build their legacy around Catholic education—Francis believed in the power of faith-based learning. This scholarship fund honors his commitment by supporting a student from Lynn in their pursuit of a St. John’s Prep education.

Richard W. Fitzgerald Fund

This fund was established by Richard's son Daniel '73. Richard attended SJP for two years: 1921-22 and 1922-23. His parents couldn't afford to keep him at the Prep, so he went to Salem High School and graduated in the class of 1925. Daniel wanted Richard to have a permanent place at SJP, so he established the endowment fund in his honor. The scholarship is for a student from Beverly, Salem or Peabody.

Flatley Family Fund

The Flatley Family Endowment Fund was established by Brian Flatley '62 to honor his parents, Collette Fulham Flatley and J. Joseph Flatley '28. The fund recognizes the sacrifices they made to provide their four children, Francis '61, Ellen, Brian '62, and Kevin '68 with a combined 64 years of Catholic education. In all, twelve members of the Flatley and Fulham families graduated from the Prep. Brian was a teacher, coach, and administrator at St. John's for 40 years, and his wife Kathie, worked in the Office of Institutional Advancement for nearly as long.

Raymond E. Fontana Fund

Established in 2001 by Forrest Fontana '83, this scholarship is preferably for a student from Salem or Peabody, of Italian, French or Canadian descent with a desire to study Science and/or Engineering.

J. Peter Frates III '03 Fund

The J. Peter Frates III '03 Scholarship was established in 2013 through the generosity of Prep alumni and parents who wanted to recognize Pete's contributions to St. John's and to the greater community. Peter serves as an inspiration to many, raising awareness about ALS while continuing to to fight the disease itself; he succumbed to it in December of 2019. The J. Peter Frates III '03 Scholarship provides an annual award to a 10th grader who models Pete's passion and enthusiasm for the Prep, has an incredible work ethic, is supportive of his peers, is a leader, and someone who encourages all to be their best.

George A. Gagnan '56 Fund

This scholarship was established in 2024 to honor the legacy of George A. Gagnan '56. George grew up locally in Peabody with little means, was a multi-sport athlete at St. John's, named a team captain in Football his senior year, Catholic Conference, as well as Agganis All-Star, and eventually went on to receive a Division I scholarship from the University of Miami. When his playing career was over, he went on to coach locally at Salem High School, and Malden Catholic. He remained a coach and steadfast mentor until the very end to many of his players, and loved nothing more than catching up with them over the years. George began bringing his grandson, Logan Mahoney '14 to Prep games at the age of four, and Logan followed in his footsteps in playing football at SJP, being named team captain, achieving the same all-star accolades, and now, coaching on the Prep’s varsity football staff. George had a true gift of gab, and was a tremendous friend to many throughout the SJP community, he was one of a kind. Family, to George, was everything, and St. John’s Prep held a special place in his heart. This fund ensures his love and admiration for SJP lives on in his name.

Michael E. Geraghty Fund

For a man with such a positive outlook and gratitude for life, he had a tumultuous childhood. As a child, he contracted tuberculosis in his hip and with that diagnosis, was sent to live at the New England Peabody Home for Crippled Children at the age of five, and where he stayed until age 17. He only left the institution twice during his time there -- one illustrious time was when Ted Williams visited, and much to the outraged consternation of the nursing staff, insisted on throwing him into his own car and taking him to a game at Fenway. He put himself through Northeastern University and married Grace in 1961, and they had eight children. The family lived first in Tewksbury, then moved to North Andover, where Mike was active as a Little League coach and as a volunteer at St. William's and St. Michael's parishes. Mike was a firm believer in Catholic education, and his sons Mike Jr. '80, Jimmy '81, Tommy '86, and Kevin '87 are all proud Prep Eagles. Mike Sr. died at the age of 53, and his family created this scholarship as a way to honor his memory.

Jamie Grabowski '01 Fund

Jamie Grabowski, who was a state champion wrestler and a two-time academic All American at the Prep, attended the Coast Guard Academy after graduation. This scholarship was established in his memory after his death in February of 2004, and is awarded to a member of the current junior class who has best exhibited Jamie's determination to achieve the highest results in all that he pursues in life.

Carl A. Graczyk '72 Fund

This scholarship was established in 1977 by Carl's family and friends after he died in an accident at the age of 23. Carl was from Danvers and graduated from the Prep in 1972. He played on the football team as a fullback and threw the javelin on the track team. Carl was a genuine and compassionate student and teammate.

Thomas W. Haas '74 Aviation Endowment Fund

This fund was established to support the Aviation Club and aviation curriculum here at St. John's.  

Elizabeth "Bunny" and Dr. Paul Hannaway '54 Fund

Dr. Paul Hannaway grew up in Marblehead and graduated from St. John's Prep in 1954. He and his wife, Bunny, were married for 46 years and raised their large family of six children in Marblehead. Paul was a pre-med student at UNH, and earned his medical degree from Albany Medical Center in 1963. He founded a successful practice, Asthma and Allergy Affiliates in Salem, becoming a leader in the field of allergy and immunology. He died in 2007. His wife, Bunny, a Swampscott native, was a Simmons College graduate and a longtime Red Cross volunteer. She was also active in the local arts scene as a painter. This scholarship honors their legacy of emphasizing education and philanthropy.

Harrigan Family Centennial Fund

The Harrigan Family Centennial Fund was set up by the children (Diane, Brian, and Barry) of Marie (Fontana) Harrigan and William A. "Bill" Harrigan '42. Bill was a post-grad student, when the Prep had a two-year PG program as well. After his time in the US military as a medic, he designed highways for the state of Massachusetts, and ran a successful solo optometry business. Following in his footsteps to the Prep were his sons, Brian '72 and Barry '78, as well as grandson Jarret '11. In his later years, Bill wrote a memoir, "The Medic" - a personal account of his time as an Army medic during World War II. The Harrigan family honors Marie and Bill through this scholarship fund, supporting students who have a drive to succeed, a love of St. John's, and a commitment to their own and the SJP family.

Head of School’s Fund

The Head of School's Fund (formerly the Headmaster's Fund) was established in 2011 to honor all Head of School's at St. John's, past and present.

Mary and Paul Hennessey '52 P'83 GP'16 Fund

This scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of Mary A. Hennessey by her husband, and trustee emeritus Paul (class of 1952), son and former trustee David (class of 1983) and daughters Julie and Karen. The Hennesseys have a long-standing and prominent tradition of family commitment to St. John's Prep. It was fitting that the family came together and decided to honor Mary's memory by establishing this scholarship award. With Paul's passing in December of 2020, the award now bears his name as well in honor of his legacy at the Prep and will be presented annually to a member of the junior class. It is the family's wishes that the recipient be a young man who best exemplifies the qualities of the Xaverian Brothers and has come to appreciate the role that St. John's has played in his life. The recipient must maintain a solid record of academic achievement and has been an active participant in extracurricular activities.

Lt. Derek Hines '99 Fund

This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Lt. Derek Hines '99, who was killed while on patrol with his ranger unit in Afghanistan in September, 2005. This award goes to a rising senior who is recognized as a fearless leader and a beloved fan favorite, who always places his team first. Displaying exemplary sportsmanship, he is supremely competitive, intelligent, and extraordinarily conditioned with an unmatched work ethic. The contributions of the recipient, on and off the field, cannot be measured by statistics alone. This award is not based on athleticism or athletic ability, but on the qualities of sportsmanship and school spirit.

Gerald A. Iorio Endowment Fund for Music

The Gerald A. Iorio Fund was created by Mary Ellen and Rich Iorio '77 P'13 to honor Rich's father. His father was the Director of Music for the city of Revere for many years, leading their chorus. He was also a swing jazz musician, and he loved the Prep! This fund is to honor his legacy. The fund is to be used at the discretion of the music department for the advancement of academic mission and student needs.

Howard A. Jones '78 Fund

Howard Jones, SJP Class of '78, died in an automobile accident shortly after graduation. Howard was gregarious, popular, and bright, and played hockey and baseball. Several family members, also Prep graduates, including his grandfather and father, decided that, in lieu of flowers, that donations in his memory would go to a scholarship fund in Howard's name.

John A. and Virginia M. Kaneb Fund

This scholarship fund was set up by John and Virginia Kaneb to help fund a Prep education for a deserving student so that he could have the same experience their own sons had at SJP. The Kanebs sent six sons to the Prep: Stephen '76, Peter '78, Gary '79, Bruce '80, Jeffrey '82 and Christopher '86.

Daniel F. Kearns '74 Fund

Daniel Kearns '74 died in 1995, and this fund was established to honor his intense love of the theater. In order to perpetuate both Dan's memory and his enthusiastic dedication to theater, a group of former classmates came together to create this scholarship for a current Prep student whose passion for theater runs as deep as Dan's.

Br. Edward J. Keefe, C.F.X. Fund

Established in 1999, this fund was established to honor the legacy of Brother Edward J. Keefe, C.F.X., the Prep's longest serving Headmaster (1974 to 1989).

Stephen J. Kiely '68 Fund

The Stephen J. Kiely '68 Fund was established as an endowed scholarship award in his memory by his family in 1994 and is presented annually to members of the senior class who are continuing their education at Dartmouth College.

KIPP Scholars Fund

Paul '55 and Karen Laski Endowment Fund

Paul Laski '55 set this fund up in his and his wife's name, but to serve as a lasting memorial to his parents, William and Anna. They understood the importance of quality education and made sacrifices to ensure that each on their three boys received the best. Paul sees this as a way they have the opportunity to repay them for their foresight and thoughtfulness. Now that he has the means himself, through the Laski Fund he wants to provide support to those who are motivated to learn, but may not have the opportunity to do so. "I will always feel that my success in life is strongly tied to my days at the Prep. I hope that the Fund will help others to have similar thoughts in future decades."

The Joseph '60 and Judith Levis Endowed Fund

Joe Levis '60 P'85 '92 '94 is an alumnus, Prep alumni parent and Trustee Emeritus. Along with his wife, Judie, they established the Joseph '60 and Judith Levis Endowed Fund in 2019 to provide tuition assistance to students from the Merrimack Valley. Joe and Judie both feel that it is important to give back and to help provide opportunities for students who otherwise might not be able to attend St. John's.

Brother Linus, C.F.X. Fund

In his inimitable and unassuming way, Brother Linus, C.F.X. was a giant at St. John's. As a religion teacher, guidance counselor, three-sport coach and mentor, he transformed the lives of countless students until his passing in 1977. The Brother Linus, C.F.X. Scholarship, established in his honor and memory, is awarded to a freshman who, in the eyes of his teachers, is an outstanding individual and a student who, in his first year, has displayed a model of academic achievement and involvement in school activities.

The Sean Lynch '85 Scholarship is given out annually at Baccalaureate, and was established in memory of Sean Lynch '85 by his family and friends after his death on 9/11/01 in the World Trade Center. Malcolm F. MacLean III Memorial Fund

Malcolm and his family lived next to the Xaverian Brothers cemetery for twenty five years. On Saturday afternoons Fr. Richard Smith, chaplain at Danvers State Hospital, was kind enough to say Mass in the chapel at Pophry Hall. Neighboring families were welcome to come and it was always very crowded. The Xaverian brothers were so kind to welcome neighbors to their Mass on Saturdays. Malcolm was a Trustee of SJP, President of Kiwanis and the Chairman of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce. He was deeply involved in his community and he was thrilled to have his sons graduate from SJP: Malcolm F. IV '87 and Douglas F. '90. Three MacLean grandsons are now current students at St. John's.

John & Mary Mahoney Fund

The John & Mary Mahoney Fund honors the lives and values of John and Mary Mahoney, both born in Lynn in 1911 and 1909, respectively. John, who spent part of his childhood at the Working Boys Home Orphanage, run by the Xaverian Brothers in Newton, remained forever grateful for their generosity and carried that spirit of care throughout his life. Deeply committed to education, he ensured that his daughter and grandchildren had the opportunity to pursue college. Mary, a graduate of Salem State Teaching College, was a pioneer in the field of special education and one of the first special needs teachers in Massachusetts. Together, John and Mary lived lives of service, gratitude, and opportunity, values this fund seeks to carry on for future generations.

Coach Thomas McNamara Fund

Coach McNamara was a long-time football coach at SJP in the 1930s and 1940s. He was inducted into the St. John's Prep Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. In his earlier years, he was a Princeton grad and baseball standout who went on to play in a major league game for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

David A. Mielcarz '73 Fund

David grew up in Salem, MA and followed his brothers, Chet and Bob to St. John's Prep. David developed a particular interest in history, and was on the track and football teams, leading to a four-year scholarship to Williams College. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing, whether in the summer, or ice fishing in the winter. After college, Dave worked for Flexcon Co. in Spencer, MA, working his way up to Director of Marketing at the time of his accidental death at age 29. He left his wife, Jane, and an infant son, Peter. His death was devastating to his family, and they set up the scholarship to be awarded to deserving young men who, for whatever reason, have been raised without a father.

Joe '62 and Jill Milano GP'18 '22 Faculty Excellence Fund

The purpose of the fund will be to support deserving faculty members who wish to pursue a professional learning project or special professional development opportunity that will benefit students in their classes.

Joseph A. Milano '62 Fund

Joseph A. Milano '62 went onto Norwich University from SJP and then was commissioned as a 2nd LT in 1966 as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Services Corps during the Vietnam War. After the war, he continued his service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a member of the Massachusetts State Guard attaining the grade of Brigadier General. He is now the President and CEO of "America's Oldest Restaurant", the Union Oyster House, which was recently named the Best Landmark Restaurant in North America for 2020. Mr. Milano also serves as the Honorary Consul General of Thailand, as a senior member of the Boston Consular Corps, and as Vice President of the United Nations Association of Greater Boston.

Minigan Family Fund

Mike Minigan graduated from St. John's in 1973, matriculated to the University of New Hampshire, graduating with a degree in Political Science in 1978, and earned his Masters Degree in Mass Communications at Boston University. His career began in journalism, before moving to the business side in marketing and corporate communications, and eventually led to a pioneering position with America Online, as part of a small team responsible for developing and managing the world's first large scale online shopping environment. He and his wife Elizabeth, along with their four children, retired to Sonoma, California, where they launched Minigan Properties, a residential renovations business, and Mike spent several years coaching freshman and JV girls basketball at Sonoma Valley High School. The Minigan Family Endowed Scholarship is intended to support highly motivated students who otherwise would not have access to a St. John's Prep education. It grew from a growing appreciation for the benefits and relationships Mike still enjoys as a result of his years at the Prep.

The Nasser Family Fund has been established by Paul and Bethany Nasser along with their son Nicholas to provide financial support to a well deserving student who otherwise may have not had the opportunity to attend St. John's Prep. Paul Nasser formerly served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at St. John's.

Richard P. Norris '68 Scholarship Fund

Like so many alumni, Richard was able to attend the Prep on scholarship. It was a gift that provided not only a solid education, but lifelong friendships and a passion for running, all of which imbued his life and career. As an executive in the aviation industry, Richard travelled the world and expanded his love of running to international marathons while using skills acquired at the Prep to cultivate new friends and a deep appreciation of foreign cultures. This scholarship in Richard’s name provides other students with the same opportunities to grow intellectually, physically, and spiritually.

O'Brien Student Athlete Leadership Initiative Fund

The O'Brien Student-Athlete Leadership Initiative Fund was established by Colleen and Bill O'Brien '88 to improve collaboration between academic and athletic leadership on campus. Joseph T. O'Connor '50 Fund

Joe was a math whiz at the Prep, winning the Math Award at graduation. He went on to Bowdoin College, where he finished in three years with a BA in Math, and then went to MIT and completed a BS in Aerospace Engineering in two years. He also earned his Masters and Doctorate at MIT and went on to work at the MIT Draper Lab on all of the early moon flights. His life was cut short by cancer at 51. This scholarship was established to honor his memory.

The Fr. Tony Penna Fund honors a special teacher, mentor, and 2022 Prep Hall of Honor inductee. The endowed Fund will provide tuition assistance to a qualified St. John's student each year who demonstrates Fr. Tony's spirit of gratitude, sincerity, and authenticity in his everyday life.

Samuel O. Penni Fund

Samuel Penni was born to a Sicilian and a French immigrant in 1918 and grew up quite poor, though his father eventually became a successful small grocer in Marblehead. Samuel was the oldest of eight children, who all attended public school. After serving in the Navy commanding a LST (Landing ship/tank, a naval ship specially designed to transport and deploy troops, vehicles, and supplies onto foreign shores), he went to night school at Boston University on the GI Bill. He went into the insurance business, eventually establishing his own agency in Boston. He had five children, all of whom attended Catholic high schools, including two to St. John's (Peter '60 and Dan '65).

J. Roger Rainville '47 Fund

J. Roger Rainville, a Salem, MA native, graduated in 1947 after spending four years as a commuter student at St. John's. He played varsity football and hockey, and was a member of the 1946 championship football team. He helped support his Prep education by working throughout his high school years, including as a counselor at the school's summer camp. He valued and thoroughly enjoyed his camaraderie of his classmates and teammates and the mentorship of his teachers and coaches. Throughout his life, Roger spoke with great appreciation and fondness for his days at the Prep.

Michael Dennis Reid '53 Fund

Michael started at St. Michael's school in South Berwick, Maine, then went onto St. John's, just like his brothers, Peter and John, before him. After graduation, he travelled through Europe with his two brothers before heading to Georgetown University. After college, he started an illustrious career in international banking. He later returned to New England and went into the antique business.

Peter Noel Reid, M.D. '50 Fund

Peter Reid was born on Christmas Day in NJ, and after moving to Montreal, then South Berwick, Maine where he went to grade school. He attended St. John's Prep as a boarding student; his older brother John was a Junior when he arrived, and he was a senior when his younger brother Michael entered freshman year. John and Peter were avid photographers, and had their own "dark room" at home. At the Prep, Peter was an official photographer with a press pass for sporting and other events. After St. John's, he went on to UNH for pre-med, then onto the University of Ottawa Medical School. He married and moved to NH, opening a private practice, despite being sick. He died in his third year of practice, and his brother John established this scholarship in his memory with the hope that future generations of students would enjoy St. John's as much as Peter did.

Rogers Family Foundation Fund

St. John's former Trustee, Amy Rogers Dittrich, is the Managing Trustee of the Rogers Family Foundation. The Foundation has a long history of supporting Bellesini Academy in Lawrence, going back to 2003, prior to Amy's joining the family foundation's board with her two cousins, Debbie and Stephen Rogers. In 2010, the Foundation partnered with St. John's to support Bellesini students matriculating to the Prep.

In 1939, Dan Rourke received a scholarship that enabled him to attend St. John's Prep. He went on to attend Harvard and had a long and successful career in the insurance industry. Evan Scollard '13 Scholarship Fund

Evan’s four years at the Prep were a formative experience. He loved the brotherhood and the academic challenges. He was president of the Animal Welfare Club and active in many school-wide activities. Evan went on to graduate from Trinity College in Hartford. His ambition was to continue on to law school and a position in the state department. To enhance his law school application to a Top 10 school, he went to Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and became a weapons officer aboard the USS Boxer based in San Diego. He was an amazing young man and would have produced an equally amazing career. His scholarship is awarded to a deserving student that possesses empathy for others less fortunate and an inner drive to be the best they can be.

Shaw Family Endowment Fund

The Shaw Family Endowment Funds hope to honor Ryan Shaw '15 and give back to St. John’s Prep, a defining place in the life of Ryan and his older brother, Connor Shaw '12. Through funds earmarked to faculty, programs, and scholarships, Scott, Joanne, Connor, and Maddy hope to enable Prep students for years to come to ideate, create, and implement business plans that will help the greater community become a better place. Ryan was an amazing young man whose four years at the Prep were arguably the best of his life. He followed his older brother to St. John's but quickly created his own path in his academic, athletic and creative pursuits, even winning a Boston Globe Gold Award for painting. With a few of his Prep friends, he created a successful business that exists to this day. He went on to attend the D’Amore McKim School of Business at Northeastern University, where he excelled academically, spent a semester abroad in Dublin, and joined the Pike fraternity. Tragically, he died of bacterial meningitis a few days after finishing exams his freshman year. Ryan was a young man who rarely had a bad day. He was inquisitive, imaginative, business-minded, and empathetic. He valued family and friendship above all else. His wisdom far exceeded his years. The Shaw Family Endowment Funds are a way to support the academic and personal growth of Prep students as young boys become mature, educated, confident and faith-based young men molded by a sense of community and brotherhood.

Mr. Joseph Sirois Sr. and Mrs. Sirois both grew up in Peabody, coming from families with little means. Joseph was an outstanding amateur boxer who eventually opened a leather tannery in Peabody with his brother. Joseph Sirois, Jr. '49 started the Prep tradition; he then sent his sons, Joseph III '75 and Michael '77 to St. John's.

Marion and Francis Sullivan P'73 Fund

The Marion and Francis Sullivan Scholarship Fund was established by Mark P. Sullivan '73 in fond memory of and tribute to his parents. Marion (Reilly) Sullivan grew up in Quincy, MA while Francis resided in Charlestown, MA. Both the Reilly and Sullivan families were devout Catholics as Francis joined the Seminary at the University of Notre Dame '49 and Catholic University '51. A month before his scheduled ordination, Francis decided the priesthood was not his life’s path. He was drafted into the Army and during basic training camp in San Antonio, TX with orders to fight in Korea, Francis was involved in a military truck accident that left him in critical condition and in a month-long coma. While rehabilitating from his injuries in Boston, Francis met Marion and the two married in 1954. As a result of these circumstances, Mark has always felt fortunate to have been born and have parents who sacrificed for him to attend 16 years of Catholic schools: grammar, high school, and college. Mark’s quality of life rests upon the sacrifices and inspiration of his parents who sent him to board at St. John’s Prep. Mark received an exceptional St. John’s education while learning to live the Xaverian spiritual values: Humility, Zeal, Trust, Compassion, and Simplicity. This scholarship carries on Marion and Francis’ legacy and its objective is to support students who maintain a solid record of academic achievement, are active participants in extracurricular activities, and need financial assistance to attend St. John’s.

Longtime faculty member Brother Robert J. Sullivan, C.F.X. was honored by his former students with the establishment of this fund in 2005. The fund supports the Brother Robert J. Sullivan, C.F.X. Lecture Series, featuring individuals whose lives align with the mission and values that are at the center of the St. John’s community.

James C. Zampell '71 and Brian J. Zampell '00 Fund

Christine Zampell P'00, a current Trustee of St. John’s Prep, started this fund to honor her husband Jim '71 and son Brian '00. Over the years, the Zampell family has supported various brick-and-mortar initiatives to help modernize the school, but now focuses on supporting the school’s endowment. Christine wants this fund to support current and future students so that they may enjoy the same opportunities that St. John’s created for her husband and son. Christine remarked, “When my husband’s high school, St. Peter’s in Gloucester, was forced to close, Jim was able to complete his high school education at St. John’s Prep. He always appreciated this opportunity and it’s a big part of why we want to give back to the school.”

Mary Louise and Alexander Paul Ziolkowski '58 Fund

Paul Ziolkowski '58 attended the Prep on a scholarship himself. The scholarship was given to an altar server from St. Mary of the Annunciation Church in Danvers. He thrived on the academics at the Prep, and then went onto the engineering program at Tufts University. He had a very successful career that included positions at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, Boeing, Raytheon, DynaPert, and as an engineer on Boston's Big Dig. His wife, Mary, was a teacher, and when she died, he established the scholarship in her memory.
