School welcomes 11 new members, celebrates two legacy teams and bestows a Crystal Eagle Award at ceremony

St. John’s Prep celebrated its 2025 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Class in conjunction with Homecoming this past weekend. The class is the 33rd in School history as 11 inductees become entrants number 299 to 310. This year’s event inside the Leo and Joan Mahoney Wellness Center also featured a formal recognition of the baseball program’s back-to-back state championship teams of 1999 and 2000 as well as Crystal Eagle Award honoree.

Class of 2020 alumnus Gus Baylow, play-by-play voice, broadcast manager and corporate partnership sales executive for the Baltimore Orioles’ High A minor league affiliate, served as Master of Ceremonies. The new induction class featured six entrants who received their diplomas between 2011 and 2015.

As for the two teams being recognized, the 1999 baseball squad slogged its way to the Division 1 tournament with an 11-9 record, but rolled to seven straight win-or-go-home victories by averaging 11.3 runs a game, exploding for 19 to beat St. John’s Shrewsbury in the final for the program’s first state title. The squad gave longtime coach Pat Yanchus his first ring and he was inducted into this Hall of Fame the following year. The 2000 squad wasn’t perfect, but mashed all season—hitting .342 as a team entering the tournament—then picked up the pace in the postseason, scoring double-digit runs in five of six games, including an improbable comeback from a six-run deficit in the state final.

The ceremony’s individual inductees were Dan Tucker ’03 (Track & Field, Football), Ian Butterbrodt ’15 (Wrestling), Aaron Athanas ’12 (Swimming & Diving, Water Polo), Sam Kurker ’12 (Ice Hockey), Nick Pandelena ’12 (Golf, Ice Hockey), Nate Cyr ’11 (Football, Rugby), Gram Slattery ’11 (Sailing, Alpine Skiing), Nick Carlucci ’06 (Alpine Skiing), Lonnie Hill ’02 (Basketball, Football, Track & Field), Coach Jane Carter P’20 (Fencing Coach), Coach John Roy ’87 P’16 ’18 ’22 (Varsity Lacrosse Coach; Basketball & Lacrosse Athlete).

The School also honored retired Boston Herald sportswriter Danny Ventura with a Crystal Eagle Award.

The 2025 Athletic Hall of Fame Committee was comprised of Kara Brown, Christy Carlucci, Dave Crowell, Keith Crowley, Andrew Frates ’06, Dan Letarte ’86, Chris Lynch, Jim O’Leary, Wendy Olson, Jameson Pelkey, John Pynchon ’01, and Tara Sartori.
