College-Bound Athletes at St. John's Prep Seal the Deal

School celebrates 18 Eagles scholar-athletes taking the next step as NCAA signing windows roll out.

St. John’s Prep athletics is proud to recognize 18 Eagles student-athletes who have made commitments to compete at the college of their choice. Scholar-athletes representing eight sports inked commitment letters on Wednesday during the ongoing NCAA signing periods.

The outflow of future college athletes from the Prep campus mirrors the recent success of Eagles athletic teams. St. John’s athletics captured 20 state and New England titles from October 2021 through June 2023 and added seven more MIAA championships and a New England title during the 2023-24 academic year.

“This is one of those annual events that never loses its appeal,” said St. John’s Prep Athletic Director Jameson Pelkey. “These student-athletes own a tremendous commitment to excel and it’s a remarkable accomplishment for them along with their families, teammates and coaches. You don’t become a viable collegiate student-athlete overnight. It takes years of time, energy and desire and the most important phase takes place here. We’re proud to have shared in their journey and we’re excited to follow their progress at the next level.”

Not surprisingly, the four-time defending state champion Eagles’ lacrosse team produced a signing-period high of seven scholarship athletes. Four from this batch of signees will attend an Ivy League School, while the remainder will spread their wings to represent schools from the Big South Conference to the Big 10 and the Patriot League to the Northeast Conference. The school will announce further commitments by student-athletes this spring.

The NCAA did away with National Letters of Intent this past October due to a loss of enforcement authority in anticipation of revenue sharing with athletes. Student-athletes now sign a written offer of athletic aid with schools. Officially, this still has the force and effect of prohibiting other schools from sending any recruiting communications. Under the terms of this new arrangement, schools are committed to a financial aid offer once the athlete signs, but the athlete may enter the transfer portal to change schools without penalty.
