St. John’s convened its annual ceremony for the Prep’s 2024 induction class into the National Honor Society on Wednesday evening. The event marked the 63rd observance of the occasion since the Brother Benjamin Chapter of the National Honor Society, named for St. John’s founding headmaster, was established at the School in November 1961. Among 171 inductees this year, 62 were seniors and 109 were juniors. Keynote speaker and 2025 Distinguished Alumnus David Hennessey '83 P'16 used the economic concept of elasticity—the measure of how one variable reacts to a change in a second variable—as an analogy to show that the smallest acts of kindness can also have a big impact.
Mr. Hennessey said in conclusion, "That little pin that you will carry with you going forward from tonight has tremendous meaning. It is like a ribbon of honor that you have earned and is a well-deserved reminder of the great things that you have achieved to date. But, it is also a reminder of your newfound duty to be leaders here on campus; a leadership based on a humble and selfless willingness to serve others."
Reinforcing the Mr. Hennessey's elasticity analogy, Head of School Ed Hardiman, Ph.D. P'19 '21 '26 first asked students to stand and applaud their parents and guardians for supporting their sons through their lives. Dr. Hardiman invoked the spirit of the Xaverian values: "I believe in you. I believe in your potential to succeed. I believe in your potential to be a force for good. To overcome challenges. And your ability to be a servant leader who can influence any situation you encounter for the good of others."
This year’s NHS officers, Matthew Cushing ’25, John Pascucci ’25, James Willett ’25, and Ryan Yu ’26 served in student-speaker roles at the assembly, each taking turns to address the four principles for candidate consideration and induction: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.
To qualify for NHS membership, students must demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, character, and a commitment to community service. Specifically, students must earn a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, contribute at least 30 hours of community service in the preceding year, and demonstrate leadership as well as substantive involvement in the life of the school. Brother Benjamin, namesake of the Prep’s NHS chapter, served as St. John’s headmaster from 1910 to 1917.
