St. John’s convened its annual ceremony for the Prep’s 2025 induction class into the National Honor Society on Wednesday evening.

The event marked the 64th observance of the occasion since the Brother Benjamin Chapter of the National Honor Society, named for St. John’s founding headmaster, was established at the School in November 1961. Among the 156 inductees this year, 53 were seniors and 103 were juniors. Keynote speaker Ms. Sandra Martin P'15 addressed the newest inductees with guidance and wisdom as they continue on their journey to find their own sense of self.

"The moment you stop expecting recognition is the moment you become truly capable of greatness," said Martin. "You will no longer be limited by what others can see or understand. You will be free to pursue that which is truly meaningful. You will find your own sense of self.

"I challenge you: Use what you have learned and demonstrated about discipline, service, and character, and use it in service of something real that matters to you. Find your sense, then trust and follow it. If later life refuses to recognize you, when, if your accomplishments go unnoticed, remember this moment. The real honor is in becoming a man who knows his own worth."

Following the awarding of pins and certificates by Principal/Associate Head of School Dr. Keith Crowley, Assistant Principal for Academics for Grades 11 and 12 Dr. Mark McManmon P'26 '27, Assistant Principal for Academics for Grades 9 and 10 Mrs. Stacy Banos, and National Honor Society moderator and English faculty John Munro '02, the audience listened in to a virtual address from Head of School Dr. Ed Hardiman P'19 '21 '26.

"I'm fairly confident that you didn't get here alone," said Hardiman. "Who are the people that helped get you here tonight? My question to you is, how have you shown your gratitude? How have you expressed your thanks? How do you give gratitude for what you have at St. John's and beyond?"

This year’s NHS officers, Campbell Berglund '26, Patrick Kaminski '26, Philip Maestranzi '26, and Ryan Yu ’26 served in student-speaker roles at the assembly, each taking turns to address the four principles for candidate consideration and induction: scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The ceremony was also accompanied by the St. John's Prep Concert Band conducted by Mr. Seelan Manickam.

To qualify for NHS membership, students must demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, character, and a commitment to community service. Specifically, students must earn a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, contribute at least 30 hours of community service in the preceding year, and demonstrate leadership as well as substantive involvement in the life of the school. Brother Benjamin, namesake of the Prep’s NHS chapter, served as St. John’s headmaster from 1910 to 1917.
