The Day Doesn't End After the Last Bell

STUDENT LIFE

After the final bell, the Prep campus reboots into a co-curricular hub of exploration, collaboration, and inspiration. We lean into this approach to help young men soak up new experiences, discover new passions, and build new skills. Fully 90 percent of our students participate in after-school activities and events.

Explore, Experiment, Evolve

There's a huge world outside of the classroom to explore, and that's what student life at St. John's Prep aims to tap into. Whether a student tries a club for the first time that develops into a lifelong hobby, they really love something in particular and want to find others to share that passion with, or they want to hone their leadership skills, moderators and the student life team are here to support whatever it is that students love to do.

Recreational Sports

The Prep offers a rotating array of recreational sports for all students in grades 6 through 12.

Dress Code

We believe a dress code indicates a common mission and demonstrates commitment to your teachers and classmates. Our dress code applies to all students in grades 6 through 12.

Everyday Attire

Everyday dress code includes a gray, white, or navy blue polo with solid colored pants, a belt, and neutral/dark colored shoes. Students can also wear a solid-colored quarter zip, sweater, or a St. John's Prep crewneck.

Dress Up Days

On special occasion days—first and last days of school, liturgies, masses, and awards ceremonies, about five or six days in total—all students are required to wear a dress shirt and tie. Generally speaking, jackets are not required unless you're involved in a volunteer or leadership role.

Dress Down Days

Dress down days occur about once a month, and are all in support of non-profit organizations. On dress down days, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to bring in $5 to support that month's charity or charities.

No One Walks Alone

Transitions like coming to a brand new school or moving up to the high school can be big steps to take! That's why we have intentional, age-appropriate programs and structures in place to help students throughout their Prep journey.

  • Turf Nights (Middle School): Even before orientation, all Middle Schoolers are invited to campus to hang out and play games with each other. It's a low-key way for boys to get to know one another even before orientation.
  • Eagles Nest Orientation (6th grade) and Eagles Wings Orientation (9th grade) are two-day-long programs that take place before school starts. Students are able to meet their classmates, go through a mock school day, see where their classrooms are, and learn about all of the support resources available to them.
  • Freshman Life Coordinator: When the Middle School started, so did a new position on campus—our freshman life coordinator. The freshman life coordinator's sole role is support the freshman class, both those students who come from our middle school as well as those brand new to St. John's Prep. They meet with each freshman individually, help them navigate social interactions, finding a new club, communicating with a teacher, and serve as an additional point person for freshman parents.

"Freshman year is fun, challenging, exciting, and sometimes nerve wracking. But there is so much incredible growth that happens over the course of the year, and I love being a part of that journey."

Michelle Francisco
Freshman Life Coordinator

“I’m from Billerica, a town where don't have many other students from. On the first day of orientation, I was very nervous coming in, and I really didn't know anybody to be honest with you. But the orientation leaders made me feel really welcome. I'm at this point where I'm a senior now, and it feels really good to be able to give back and make all the freshmen feel very welcome here on campus.”

Learning to Lead

St. John’s Prep offers a variety of leadership opportunities for students to serve their peers, develop their skills, and embrace both the challenges and rewards of leadership. Because of the responsibility these roles carry, students apply or are selected for many positions.

  • Campus Ministry Student Advisory Committee (CMSAC): Seniors serve as peer ministers, supporting liturgies, retreats, and service initiatives.
  • Community of Concern: Student leaders promote healthy decision-making and support peers around topics such as stress management and substance use.
  • Eagles Wings Leaders: Students welcome and mentor new students, helping freshmen transition to the Prep community.
  • Multicultural Affairs and Community Development Student Advisory Council (MACD SAC): Juniors and seniors help foster belonging, inclusion, and a community where every student can be their authentic self.
  • National Honor Society: Members develop leadership skills and serve their school and broader community.
  • Spire Society: Student ambassadors represent the Prep at admissions, alumni, and community events.
  • Sophomore Retreat: Student leaders help facilitate the annual retreat and build community among their classmates.
  • Student Council: Students run for elected positions including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
  • Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools Leadership Team (XBSS): Six faculty-nominated juniors represent the Prep at the annual XBSS retreat and lead a service project during their senior year.

At St. John's Prep, there is an opportunity for every student to develop his confidence and character through leadership roles.
