Where Servant Leadership Thrives

CAMPUS MINISTRY

As an inclusive, Catholic, Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School, faith, community, and service is fundamental to the Prep experience.

Faith and Service in the Xaverian Tradition

At St. John's Prep, campus ministry is the spiritual and service-oriented center of school life. As an inclusive, Catholic, Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School, campus ministry programming is meant to help students grow in faith, develop as servant leaders, and live out our Xaverian values of humility, compassion, simplicity, trust, and zeal. Students from all faith backgrounds are welcome to participate in campus ministry activities.

Service Opportunities

Throughout the academic year, students can participate in service opportunities at a pace and depth that feels right for them. Whether you bring something for the Backpack Drive, serve at the Haven From Hunger every week, or travel all the way to Ecuador, all acts of service are valuable.

Weekly Service

Weekly service opportunities are designed to be flexible. Students can sign up once, every week for the whole year, or anything in between.

  • Salem Boys and Girls Club
  • Seasons of Danvers
  • Xaverian House
  • Haven From Hunger

Annual Drives

These are fun, community-building traditions that benefit local non-profit organizations.

  • September Backpack Drive
  • Thanksgiving Gift Card Drive
  • Christmas Toy Drive
  • Dress Down Days (suggested donations of $5 go to benefit different non-profits every month).

Service Trips

Trips change year to year, but below are some of the locations Prep students have traveled to in the past.

  • Ecuador
  • Jamaica
  • Arizona
  • Maine
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • West Virginia
  • Texas

"...Rather, serve one another humbly in love."

Galatians 5:13

BR. WILLIAM DRINAN, C.F.X. CENTER FOR CAMPUS MINISTRY

Located in Xavier Hall, campus ministry (as it's more often referred to) is a place for students to meet with campus ministers, sign up for after-school service opportunities, meet with small groups before an international retreat, or to just get some homework done. Campus ministry is open to all students, regardless of their faith background.

Retreats

From daylong on-campus retreats to multi-day overnight experiences, students have a variety of experiences to choose from over the course of seven years. In addition to group and personal prayer as well as reflection, retreats offer students the chance to connect with their classmates and the faculty/staff moderators in a completely different way.

Middle School Retreats

  • Sixth Grade Retreat
  • Seventh Grade Retreat
  • Eighth Grade Retreat
  • Prep Middle School Leadership Institute (PMLI)

High School Retreats

  • Freshman Retreat (required)
  • Sophomore Retreat (required)
  • Emmaus Retreat (juniors)
  • Senior Retreat
  • Father-Son Retreat (rising sophomores)
  • Mother-Son Retreat (sophomores)
  • Prep Leadership Institute (PLI)

WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Campus ministers organize several masses, liturgies, and prayer services throughout the year, with multiple opportunities for students to participate. Both Middle and High Schoolers will serve in the procession, on the altar, as readers, Eucharistic Ministers, or in the liturgical choir.

A School of Servant Leaders

A servant leader is one who influences every situation for the benefit of others.

At St. John's Prep, we define a servant leader as one who influences every situation for the benefit of others. It's something all of us—faculty, staff, and students—seek to model in what the Xaverian Brothers called "the common, ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life." Servant leadership isn't something that just happens on retreats or at service sites (although that's a great expression of it!), it can be catching up a classmate on what he missed, helping a new transfer student find their way across campus, or sitting with a friend while their ride picks them up.
