Reflecting on today’s gospel reading, I can’t help but recall the 1992 movie Wayne’s World; a silly comedy about a pair of rock fans who broadcast a public access television show from their parent’s basement. “I’m not worthy” is the constant refrain throughout the movie. In today’s gospel, the centurion humbly requests Christ’s assistance to heal his servant. He recognizes that his past actions do not make him feel worthy of Christ’s assistance. He understands that Christ has the power to heal the physical aliment of his servant. But more important, Christ has the power to heal the centurion’s soul. It is a powerful message. God meets you were you are. He isn’t waiting for you to be become perfect. He loves us despite our failings.
