Today’s gospel passage suggests something worth remembering, one week into the Lenten season. These seven days going without whatever it is we are setting aside for Lent may already feel like too many. And we may be wondering if we have made a big mistake. Caffeine, sugar, Netflix: how will we make it to Easter? But participation in this ritual, however painful, is a form of asking and seeking and knocking. It is a way of petitioning God for good things. And the gospel reminds us that God knows how to give good gifts to his children. When we call, He answers. God strengthens us, His right-hand saves us, and for this, we give Him thanks.
