Successful performance on the HSPT or the SSAT tests can be the gateway to an outstanding high school education for your middle school child. St. John’s Prep offers convenient, high quality prep courses for both the HSPT and the SSAT high school admission tests. Taught by St. John’s teachers trained in test preparation, the courses use practice material carefully chosen to provide students with:
  • Effective strategies to help them cope with both math and verbal problems 
  • Extensive practice with HSPT and SSAT questions
  • Foundation necessary to boost confidence

Our faculty will help students to increase their scores by preparing them with the test-taking skills necessary to read and solve problems efficiently and accurately. Students will learn to eliminate incorrect answers and make wise educated guesses. Our faculty will help students to increase speed without compromising accuracy. All classes include pre and post-test materials as well as all classroom and study materials.

Courses Offered

Summer 2019 Prep for HSPT and SSAT Tests

HSPT TEST Preparation
Recommended for rising grade 7 and 8 students, the HSPT is preferred by most Catholic high schools. All questions are multiple choice; there is no essay. Students are tested on reading, sentence completion, verbal skills, spelling and vocabulary, and quantitative skills. Students can only take the HSPT one time so thorough preparation is critical. The HSPT Prep course offered at St. John's prepares students for all areas of the exam.

SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) Preparation
The SSAT is offered on two levels: a lower level recommended for students currently in grades 5 through 7, and an upper level recommended for students currently in grades 8-11. This course offered at St. John's is for the upper level SSAT.Recommended for rising grade 7 and 8 students.
Nine classes including pre and post tests. Begins and ends with a full length practice SSAT exam in a test like setting. Each two hour class introduces a type of question students will encounter on the exam and shows students how to cope with it more effectively. In class times practice to supplement homework SSAT topics are similar to those found in the HSPT test with additional emphasis placed on verbal analogies and statistics.

Prep for the High School Placement Test (HSPT)

Recommended for grade 8 students, the HSPT is preferred by most Catholic high schools. The exam is approximately 2½ hours long and is given in November and December. All questions are multiple choice; there is no essay. Students are tested on reading, sentence completion, verbal skills, spelling and vocabulary, and quantitative skills. Students can only take the HSPT one time so thorough preparation is critical. The HSPT Prep course offered at St. John's prepares students for all areas of the exam. 

Dates, Times and Costs: 2018-2019

  • The HSPT course consists of seven classes, beginning and ending with a full-length pre-test and post-test.
  • Tuition is $400.
  • Course #2101 (schedule here) began on Friday, September 16, 2018 and targeted the November 3 test. Location: Brother Keefe, C.F.X. Academic Center, Room K223.
  • Course #2102A (schedule here) began on Sunday, September 23, 2018 and targeted the December 1 test. Location: Brother Keefe, C.F.X. Academic Center, Room K210.
  • Course #2104 (schedule here) began on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 and targeted the December 1 test. This class only is taught at Bellesini Academy in Lawrence.

  • Classes are limited in size and fill quickly! All registrations must be received 1 week prior to the start of class so that textbooks can be ordered.  All refunds are subject to a $50 fee. No refunds will be issued after the start of the class.

Prep for the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT)

St. John's offers a prep course for the upper level SSAT for students in grades 8 to 11. Preferred by most private high schools, the exam is approximately 2½ hours in length and consists of multiple choice questions and a written essay. The test is given several times a year (see www.ssat.org). Students are tested on reading, verbal, and quantitative skills. The prep course offered at St. John's prepares students for all areas of the exam.  Practice Tests as well as a carefully designed custom textbook are provided.  

Dates, Times and Costs

  • Course #2201 began on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. Target test date is November or December.  The class meets on Wednesdays 5:30 - 7:30 pm and Sundays 9:00 am  - 11:00 am. Location: Brother Keefe, C.F.X. Academic Center, Room K214.
  • The course consists of nine classes ending with a full-length practice-test.

This course is designed specifically for students applying to both Catholic and private schools.

  • Course #2103 (schedule here) started on Friday, September 16, 2018. Target test dates are November 3 for the HSPT and December 8 for the SSAT. Location: Brother Keefe, C.F.X. Academic Center, Room K210.
  • Content is similar to both the HSPT and the SSAT with emphasis placed on the HSPT test. After taking the HSPT test, students will complete two additional classes as an intense SSAT review focusing on SSAT specific topics.
  • Tuition is $500
