Reunion Recap 2018

Reunion event pictures here!

There was an abundance of Prep spirit in the air during the 2018 edition of Reunion Weekend at St. John's!

Hundreds of alumni and guests were back on campus to reconnect, catch up, and meet fellow alumni, both young and “older” grads, from classes ending in 3 and 8. It was a great weekend to be an Eagle!

The unofficial kickoff to the weekend took place Thursday evening at the senior class True Blue event, when the Class of 2018 and their families came together to watch a video about Pete Frates ’03, our 2018 Distinguished Alumnus. A soaring tribute to Pete and everything he has accomplished in the face of unthinkable adversity, the video asked each of us to think about how we can make a difference in the lives of others. Watch the video here.

Weekend festivities went on to include everything from Friday’s golf tournament, VIP cocktail parties and all-reunion Prep Party, to Saturday’s Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a Prep community family BBQ, special reunion class dinners, both on campus and off, and the traditional Gold Eagle Breakfast on Sunday morning. This was the fifth year that reunions have coincided with Commencement weekend on campus, making this once again the most exciting time of the year for St. John’s Prep!

Prep Pride

Far Corner Golf Club in Boxford was the site once again for the annual reunion-Friday-morning alumni scramble shootout and luncheon. The foursome of 45th reunion alumni Jim Barrett ’73 and Bob McKenna ’73 and their partners Tom ’74 and George ’76 Suslak took home first place honors, with the 35th Class of ’83 reunion group of Charlie Curcuru, Derron Darcy, Andy Roy and Mike Thibault taking second place in the competition. Congrats…and thanks to all who joined us at Far Corner!

On Friday evening, alumni gathered for a reunion party under the Commencement tent, following special 25th and 50th Reunion class cocktail parties for alumni from the classes of 1993 and 1968. Many faculty members, both present and past, joined the Prep Party celebration, on hand to catch up with former students. Yearbooks set out on tables triggered a lot of memories and good-natured stories. Reunion event pictures here!

Athletic Hall of Fame

The 28th annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony began day two of the weekend, with 13 alumni athletes and one long-time SJP coach being honored this year. The prestigious Crystal Eagle Award was presented to longtime team physician John Duff, M.D. ’45. A pioneer in sports medicine, he is only the 7th recipient of the award in Prep history. Gracious in their emotional acceptance speeches, the inductees paid tribute to one another, and expressed sincere gratitude to their coaches, their teammates and their families while sharing stories and favorite memories of the Prep. See photos from event here!

The following athletes and coaches were inducted this year:

  • Mark Sullivan ’73
  • Neil Penttinen ’90
  • Ben Goldberg ’03
  • Ken Haskell Jr. ’03
  • Mike Pitt ’04

  • Jamie Mannion Jr. ’07
  • Tim Prior ’07
  • Sean Bishop ’08

Alumni also enjoyed the outdoor BBQ at the Wellness Center. And the 70th Reunion Class (!) of 1948 held a luncheon and remembrance service on campus Saturday afternoon, proving the reunion spirit stays strong for a lifetime. Photos here!

Many alumni took part in the Baccalaureate Mass in Memorial Gymnasium for the Class of 2018. The 50th Reunion classmates in attendance paid tribute to their lifelong Prep Experience by joining arms in a circle for the singing of the Alma Mater at the conclusion of the award ceremonies following the Mass. Photos from the Baccalaureate here!

Later, on Saturday afternoon and evening, there were events for the 50th reunion Class of 1968, the 45th reunion Class of 1973, the 35th reunion Class of 1983, the 30th reunion Class of 1988, the 25th reunion Class of 1993, the 20th reunion Class of 1998, the 15th reunion Class of 2003 and the 10th reunion Class of 2008. The 50th Reunion class dinner took place off campus at Davio’s at Market Street in Lynnfield. Joining the class as their invited guests were longtime Prep legendary figures Kathie and Brian Flatley, Maureen and Larry O’Neill and Joan and Fred Glatz.

Other classes also ventured off campus to celebrate. The Class of 1973 and the Class of 1998 each got together at Breakaway in Danvers, the Class of 1993 and 1988 held receptions at Ledger in Salem, the Class of 1983 hosted a lively social at Kings in Lynnfield, the Class of 2003 enjoyed the evening at Tony C’s in Somerville, and the Class of 2008 partied at The Warehouse in Boston’s Financial District.

Once again, there was no shortage of banter and stories as alumni recalled their days on campus, and brought one another up to date on family, careers and life's adventures since graduation from the Prep.

Gold Eagles of 1968

Sunny skies prevailed on Sunday morning for the Gold Eagle Breakfast, where members of the 50th Reunion Class of 1968 received their official golden diplomas and snappy straw hats with navy Prep spire-embroidered bands.

The Gold Eagles joined the graduating class in the procession to the Commencement tent, where the weekend ended with the 108th Commencement exercises at St. John's and hearty congratulations to the Class of 2018!

Seeing the past, present and future come together on and around campus this weekend was once again a powerful affirmation to current students that the St. John’s Prep brotherhood is a lasting bond – once an Eagle, you are an Eagle for life!
