Reunion Recap 2017

Prep pride was in overdrive at the 2017 Reunion Weekend, May 19-21. St. John’s welcomed more than 1,100 alumni and guests back to the nest. Reconnecting, catching up, and even making new friends with both young and “older” grads from classes ending in 2 and7, had everyone in the true spirit of the weekend!

The unofficial kickoff to the weekend took place Thursday evening at the senior class True Blue event, when the 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award honoree, the Most Reverend Robert Reed '77, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, addressed the Class of 2017 via video. This is Bishop Reed’s 40th reunion year, and it was clear that his love and pride in St. John's has not diminished over the decades.

Bishop Reed asked the graduating class “to band together with all Prep alumni that span the globe, and take their experience and influence to do what they can to ensure that the Prep Experience continues to open hearts and minds."

Weekend festivities included everything from Friday’s golf tournament, VIP cocktail parties and all-reunion Prep Party, to Saturday’s Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a Prep community family BBQ, a special cornerstone dedication ceremony at the Wellness Center, special reunion class dinners, both on campus and off, and the traditional Gold Eagle Breakfast on Sunday morning.

This was the fourth year that reunions have coincided with Commencement weekend on campus, making this once again the most exciting time of the year for St. John’s Prep!

Prep Pride

Golfers gathered at Far Corner Golf Club in Boxford Friday morning for the annual reunion tournament. This year, 10th reunion ’07 grads Steve Dutcher, Nick McPherson, Kevin O’Toole and Rob Noe, took home first place honors.

On Friday evening, alumni gathered for a reunion party under the Commencement tent, following special 25th and 50th Reunion class cocktail parties for alumni from the classes of 1992 and 1967. Many faculty members, both present and past, joined the Prep Party celebration, on hand to catch up with former students. Yearbooks set out on tables triggered a lot of memories and good-natured stories.

Hall of Fame The 27th annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony began day two of the weekend, with 12 alumni athletes and two long-time SJP coaches being honored this year. Gracious in their emotional acceptance speeches, the inductees paid tribute to one another, and expressed sincere gratitude to their coaches, their teammates and their families while sharing stories and favorite memories of the Prep. Alumni also enjoyed the outdoor BBQ behind the Brother Keefe, C.F.X. Academic Center on what was a perfect spring day. See photos here!

Many then witnessed the dedication of the Wellness Center cornerstone in mid-afternoon. Many alumni took part in the Baccalaureate Mass in Memorial Gymnasium for the Class of 2017. Father Leo Shea ’56, who celebrated the Mass, linked this year’s graduating class to Prep history with numerous references throughout the liturgy, his message touching the seniors, their parents and alumni. The 50th Reunion class dinner took place on campus in the Milano Dining Room. Joining them was a group from the Class of 1982 celebrating their 35th reunion. Photos here!

Many classes ventured off campus to celebrate. The Class of 1977 gathered at Ferncroft Country Club, the Class of 1962 got together at Salem Country Club, and the Class of 2007 met at The Greatest Bar in Boston. The Class of 1997 headed to Fibber McGee’s Bar and Grill in Beverly, the Class of 1992 enjoyed a night out at Clink at the Liberty Hotel in Boston, and the Class of 1972 toasted their 45th reunion at Breakaway in Danvers

Once again, there was no shortage of banter and stories as alumni recalled their days on campus, and brought one another up to date on family, careers and life's adventures since graduation from the Prep.

Gold Eagles of 1967

Sunny skies prevailed on Sunday morning for the Gold Eagle Breakfast, where members of the 50th Reunion Class of 1967 received their official golden diplomas and snappy straw hats with navy Prep spire-embroidered bands.

The Gold Eagles joined the graduating class in the procession to the Commencement tent, where the weekend ended with the 107th Commencement exercises at St. John's and hearty congratulations to the Class of 2017!

Seeing the past, present and future come together on and around campus this weekend was once again a powerful affirmation to current students that the St. John’s Prep brotherhood is a lasting bond – once an Eagle, you are an Eagle for life!
