Prep 20/20: Strategic Plan for St. John's Prep

“We live in dynamic times that call us to prepare students for lives of meaningful citizenship and faith in a rapidly changing world. The vision expressed in the strategic plan reaffirms our mission and builds on the strength of our program. It is a natural extension of our mission to educate young men in an atmosphere animated by faith, brotherhood, and wisdom.” ~ Bernard L. Caniff, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Trustees, a 1972 graduate of St. John's, and the father of 1998 and 2000 Prep graduates.

Building on more than a century of leadership in Catholic education, and developed as the result of a three-year process involving voices from every corner of the Prep community, Prep 20/20 is a strategic plan with four initiatives that center on academic excellence, student life and the school’s mission as a Xaverian Brothers sponsored school:

  • A new academic building for the high school
  • A new wellness facility
  • Endowment growth to ensure a strong financial foundation and to generate support for student tuition assistance
  • A middle school program for boys in grades 6, 7 and 8

This plan establishes St. John’s as a preeminent, inclusive, Catholic, Xaverian Brothers sponsored school for boys in grades six through 12. Prep 20/20 is available here.

Wellness Center—Open 9/1/2017

UPDATE: The Wellness Center will open September 1, 2017.

“Our commitment to integrate the concept of wellness into daily life at St. John’s stems from our mission to educate the whole person. A center that provides the space and facilities to bring students together for athletics, fitness, and health education will add an important dimension to the educational experience at St. John’s.” ~ Principal Crowley

The wellness center will provide space and facilities to support the 20 interscholastic sports offered at St. John's, in addition to wellness programs that promote lifelong habits of health and fitness.

Grades 6, 7 and 8 – Complete

UPDATE: Grades 6, 7 and 8 opened in September 2015 with a full enrollment of 300 students.

"The middle school program will engage students at a formative moment in their development. It will be a student-centered environment, challenging yet supportive, where boys can learn and thrive." ~ Headmaster Edward P. Hardiman, PhD

Opened in September 2015 and located in Brother Benjamin Hall, the new Middle School offers the same high quality academic, co-curricular opportunities, and leadership programs offered in the High School, but in a setting tailored to the needs of younger students.

Brother Benjamin Hall, previously a high school classroom building, was renovated to house Middle School classrooms, science labs, fine arts space, study areas, school counseling offices, a dining room, and administrative offices. Academic technology resources support all aspects of the program. Middle School enrollment is 300 students. Look for more information here.

Endowment Growth

“As a Catholic, Xaverian Brothers school, we feel strongly that St. John’s must be affordable for families from a wide spectrum of incomes, including middle class families. By focusing on endowment growth, we can ensure access for those who cannot afford a Prep education without tuition assistance.” ~ Headmaster Hardiman

The focus on endowment growth called for in the strategic plan will secure a strong financial future for St. John’s, and provide tuition assistance to ensure access for students from all socio-economic backgrounds.

Academic Building – Complete

UPDATE: The Brother Keefe, C.F.X. Academic Center, for grades 9 through 12, opened in September 2015.

"The rapid pace of change in every area of life today demands that students graduate with a strong academic foundation and the ability to think critically, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively. The new high school building will be designed to foster the 21st century skills students need to understand and contribute to the world around them." ~ Principal Keith A. Crowley, PhD

The Brother Keefe, C.F.X. Academic Center is designed to promote hands-on learning and collaboration across disciplines with space for students to explore the practical application of what they study in the classroom. The 74,000-square-foot building is home to High School classrooms, labs and departmental offices for computer science, mathematics, science and world languages.
