Athletics

The Prep’s athletic tradition runs more than 100 years deep. And it shows. The Eagles have earned dozens of championship titles. Our graduates have played at Fenway Park and Gillette Stadium. They’ve even gone on to play in the NFL and compete in Olympics. But Eagles don’t just play to win, they play with honor and fairness. They know to be great, you have to be GOOD.

At St. John’s, we’ve devoted ourselves to building an athletic culture that lives and breathes by one principle: Winning is about more than what the scoreboard says at the end of a contest. The way we see it, being a student-athlete is all about learning and working to be your best.

Guided by this mindset, student-athletes develop lifelong skills, set and work toward lofty but achievable goals, and become confident in themselves—all while forming habits of excellence that extend far beyond the realm of athletics. The pride and growth that come with wearing an Eagles uniform expands on their experience as they prepare for college and career.

In grades 7 and 8, our approach is to provide students with healthy challenges—to improve or learn new sports and to gain important lessons about teamwork, respect for opponents, respect for officials and good sportsmanship. In the High School, student-athletes take those skills to the next level, fine-tuning their ability to practice and compete with humility and grace.

Our coaches work closely with student-athletes, helping them to develop new skills, improve their own abilities, and prioritize the best interest of the team while conducting themselves with respect, integrity and kindness. Every Prep student-athlete knows that he alone determines his attitude, and that the right attitude is contagious.

Naturally, we’re proud of our 116-year tradition of success on the field, the ice, the hardcourt, the track, and in the pool. In fact, we have earned the Boston Globe Nason Award* for program-wide athletic excellence 34 times. But being a student-athlete here doesn’t mean that a step toward athletics is a step away from scholarship.

At St. John’s, commitment to your studies mirrors commitment to your teammates. Sports are an authentic extension of our classrooms because all of our students strive to be their best and lift one another up—be it on the field, the stage, the lab or campus ministry.

This is why we go to practice every day. This is what fuels an athletics program that teaches lifelong lessons. At St. John’s, it’s not just about winning. It’s about doing and being your best.
