Adventures and Careers in Aviation

700. Adventures and Careers in Aviation
Rising 9th – 12th graders  (This Class is no longer accepting Registrations)

This one-week course introduces students to the basic principles of aviation and familiarizes students with career opportunities in aviation and aeronautics. The tentative schedule includes ground school instruction in the fundamentals of flight and navigation (VORs, GPS, etc.). We will take field trips to Beverly Airport, the Boston TRACON facility in Merrimack, NH, Lawrence Airport, PlaneSense Aviation at Portsmouth, NH International Airport, the Air National Guard Base at Pease AFB and the National Aviation Academy at Bedford Airport. The course will also include a special "airside" tour of Boston's Logan Airport. A candid and information-filled conversation with pilots from both the commercial and general aviation sectors will end the course. Students will also learn the basics of using Microsoft's Flight Simulator X to practice the fundamental skills of flying.

This course will introduce students to the many careers which are available in the current aviation and aeronautics industry. To participate in the various field trips, students will be required to provide a legal document of United States citizenship (birth certificate or passport) and parents will be required to sign the school's liability form which will be provided. These documents are required to visit the ANGB and the airport facilities.

Emphasis will be on the students building and testing the robots. Each robotics project will build on what has been done before so students will expand their knowledge of the robot as the class progresses. The workshop will be conducted in the Computer Lab in the A. E. Studzinski Library which houses the robotics program and provides access to the computers where the students will program the robots. There are multi-media facilities for the presentation of information to aid the campers on their journey with the robots.
