The St. John's Prep selection policy is intended to create a useful collection that supports the curriculum. Selection policy, therefore, stresses subject areas that are included in assignments from year to year. The library aims to provide both general and in-depth materials for these assignments in order to fulfill student needs at a range of reading levels.
Use of Library Resources
Books are checked out for a three week lending period. Magazines and journals are checked out for one week. A book or magazine may be renewed, provided another student has not requested it. A fine of twenty cents per day is charged for overdue materials. Students will be informed of overdue materials via the school e-mail system.
When one or more classes have been assigned a topic for which the books in the library are limited, a teacher may choose to put these books on reserve at the desk. This means that the books do not leave the library during the school day, and may be taken out overnight or for a longer period after the last class of the day if the teacher allows the books to leave the library.
Gifts of books and other materials are accepted but without commitments as to the final disposition and with the understanding that they are not necessarily to be added to the collection. The same criteria used for the selection of all other materials will be used in evaluating gift materials.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Materials may be borrowed from area public and academic libraries through interlibrary loan. This is a free service. Please see a library staff member for assistance in submitting a request for material to be delivered to SJP. The time it takes to obtain materials varies, but generally takes two to three weeks.
