Congratulations, Graduates!

Headmaster Edward P. Hardiman, Ph.D. and Principal Keith A. Crowley, Ph.D. presided over the 102nd Commencement Exercises at St. John's Prep on Sunday, May 20, awarding diplomas to the 276 members of the Class of 2012. Beneath brilliant blue skies, trustees, faculty, staff and members of the 50th reunion class lined the path as the graduates made their way from Memorial Gymnasium to Ryken Field, where the Commencement ceremony took place amid families and friends. (Images from the day here.)

Commencement capped an exciting week of activities for graduating seniors and their families, including the Baccalaureate Mass, Senior Awards Convocation, True Blue reception, tailgate cookout for graduates and their fathers and special friends, and a brunch with mothers and special friends.

Highlights

In his remarks, Dr. Hardiman exhorted the graduates to use the wisdom and values they take from St. John’s to guide them through life. “How will you put in to practice the model of your teachers, coaches and mentors? They pushed you to see new opportunities and to embrace challenges – will you do the same for others in your life’s journey? Your teachers, coaches and mentors provided opportunities for you to stand with those who mourn and those who seek justice and peace. How will you continue to stand with each other in support of those who mourn and those who are in need? Through the legacy of the Xaverian Brothers and the commitment of today’s faculty and staff you have seen a model of Xaverian educational values in action. How will you model the values of simplicity, trust, zeal, compassion and humility in an ever-changing world?”

Senior class speaker Derek Dow and Valedictorian Joshua Lang spoke about the extraordinary range of opportunities they have experienced at St. John's, the sense of awareness about their place in the larger world they have gained here, and the strength of the Prep brotherhood they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

English teacher Anne Burridge urged the seniors to find the right balance between preparing for the future and staying open for the unexpected opportunities life offers. “Graduates, what we and you have been about here at St. John’s in thousands of visible and invisible ways during your four years on this campus, not only in your successes and victories, but also in your challenges and failures, is the development of your self-awareness in recognizing and extending your spiritual, academic, artistic, and athletic gifts. As you leave the Prep, you have been given the capacity to strike that infinite equilibrium between reason and passion, between self-judgment and YOLO."

Peter J. Fallon received the Xaverian Award, which is presented annually to the graduating senior who epitomizes the values and tradition of Xaverian education. His is a family with long Prep roots, including his brother, William H. Fallon ’07, and his father, Peter Fallon ’71.

Thomas W. Haas ’74, who received the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award, was recognized during the ceremony. A pilot and flight instructor, he is deeply involved a mentor for the Aviation Club at St. John’s. He is also an ardent advocate for the arts and for using technology to enhance education across the disciplines, and provided support for the renovation of the Ryken Center for the Arts in 1995, and the addition of SmartBoards and technology resources in Brother Benjamin Hall and the A. E. Studzinski Library in 2003.
