The Prep's proud athletic tradition began in 1907 when St. John's fielded its first football team. Basketball and baseball followed in 1908, and hockey joined the lineup in 1912. Today, Prep students play 20 varsity sports and the Eagles have gone on to win dozens of championships and titles, including winning the Boston Globe Nason Award for overall excellence a remarkable 26 times.

The Catholic Conference

St. John's Prep plays in the Catholic Conference, the only all-boys Catholic school athletic league in the state and widely regarded as the strongest. The conference motto - "athletics at its best" - attests to the importance that member schools place, not only on athletic excellence, but also on academic achievement and personal character.

The five Catholic Conference schools play Division 1 in all sports and they include: St. John's Prep, Boston College High School, Catholic Memorial High School, Malden Catholic High School, and Xaverian Brothers High School. In addition to these schools, other significant opponents for St. John's Prep include St. John's Shrewsbury and Central Catholic High School.
