St. John's Prep is one of 13 Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools (XBSS) in the United States. Each spring, the schools hold a unique five-day leadership retreat attended by students from all of the sponsored schools. The theme of the retreat, "Falling in Love with the Service of God," comes from the words of Theodore James Ryken, founder of the Xaverian Brothers.
XBSS at St. John's
The XBSS students in the Class of 2011 are Joshua Kumin, Benjamin Nathan, Daniel DeChristoforo, Brendan Sweeney, Ryan Fortin, and Nathaniel Casey. Nominated by the faculty during junior year, they all share three important qualities: a commitement to social justice, a desire to live their faith, and demonstrated leadership on campus.
During the XBSS retreat, the students share prayer, participate in workshops and work collaboratively on a variety of small and large group activities. They are asked to develop a plan to promote the spirit of the Xaverian charisms at their own schools, and to make a year-long commitment to work for positive change in their school community.
